The Golden Task: Building Stronger Habits Week by Week

Written By: Taylor Hatfield & Cheyenne Garrett, Edited By: Cheyenne Garrett

Feeling stuck in a loop of resolutions and self-made promises? Have you tried implementing new habits and routines? Does it feel like year after year the “new you” has fallen flat-on-its-face? Is it Overwhelming? Tedious? How are these lifestyle shifts helping you? How do you want to help yourself?

When we are encouraged to make shifts, in my experience of life, we are met with a lack of information or an overload of steps, processes, and procedures that are unattainable with already fully booked schedules. It is hard to find balance when handling the challenges of living and our own desires, but just as Goldie Locks found the perfect porridge that was just right- so can we.

The first step of the journey, and of most resolutions: Do Not Give Up.

It has been said before: just keep swimming, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, reach for the stars. What gets left unsaid is just how challenging it can be to act upon and follow through with that roaring, go-get- em attitude. It can be difficult to remember while exploring new facets of yourself: failure is your best friend.

When integrating a new routine or resolution into one’s current lifestyle it is extremely helpful to create what I call: A Golden Task.

This is your daily reminder. The weekly reward. A single repeatable activity that is not skipped and not postponed. This is something that is structured to not feel like just another chore or obligation. Golden Tasks are like the currency for your goals. You complete the task and then that small daily currency builds the overall wealth and growth towards the desired result.

With coaching clients of The Mindfullness Aid, I teach that wellness can be thought of as a series of building blocks that serve as the foundation of a customizable assembly to each user, no matter if we are working with corners, straight edges, or connecting blocks and curvy parts. Goals and shifts in living can be viewed in the same light. By determining your types of pieces and foundational building blocks, you can begin arranging the pieces and using the golden tasks to acquire the goal.

Now how do we determine what our golden task is?

Well, looking at the shape of the overall build or end goal is the place to begin. Using a personal example my current goal that I am working on, or my overall build, is to generate more revenue for my business. Knowing my shape then allows me to determine what types of blocks I need. Utilizing my example my types of blocks include corner pieces-generating sales, connecter pieces-efficient marketing, and straight pieces the backbone of our projects which is reaching a larger target audience. I determined this by “level” of importance. My straight pieces are the meat of my build. I cannot generate sales without customers. My connecters are glue. Generating sales gets me revenue but the only way I connect all my customers together and get them to purchase something is an effective marketing strategy. The corner pieces or the sale itself brings the whole thing together creating the full picture of bringing in more revenue.

For me, my daily task is completing one task on my Facebook weekly progression challenge. This is usually posting a specific type of content or commenting on certain material. This is designed right now to help generate more views gathering my straight pieces i.e., generating more customers. In addition, it helps me prepare for my connecter pieces as I also get to practice different content and brainstorm marketing strategies…two birds one golden task.

If you have made it this far in reading and in your personal life- congrats! By now, hopefully, you are feeling motivated with clarity about where you are, where you would like to be, and how you would like the trip from A to B to look like. As a word of caution, however, do not overwhelm yourself trying to accomplish everything or anything “now” The results are not always instantaneous, like cooking porridge it takes time, patience, care, and some love.

Implementation and Integration

When placing your golden task into your existing schedule or routines there are two important points to remember. First do not take on too much. If you have a tough time building habits or maintaining a routine start with a weekly or bi-weekly golden task. If you have more than one goal/shift pick the most important one for you and create a golden task for it first. I state this because I have found if you put the pressure on yourself to do too much too fast on a goal you will fizzle out. Like Goldie locks the baby portage was the best…. baby steps are always the best place to start. My second warning is prepared to change. I teach a method to my clients called the TERR method of implementation. The key piece is replaced, and repeat. When implementing your golden task be sure to replace it if it is not working or you have completed a mini goal and need to move on. This will help ensure continued progress and help to prevent plateaus.

Now that you have everything you need it is time to start implementing and tracking your progress. I recommend utilizing a tracking method that you find fun and easy to analyze. This could be an app, graph paper, a fill in the object. You are looking for anything that gives you a boost of dopamine.
